Natasha Osawaru, wife of Nigerian music star Innocent “2Baba” Idibia, has been appointed Minority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly.

Osawaru, who represents Egor Constituency, was announced as the new minority leader during Monday’s plenary following changes to the leadership structure of the state legislature.

Her appointment followed the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku as Speaker amid reported moves by some lawmakers to remove him from office.

Agbebaku was subsequently replaced by Yekini Idaiyi, who represents Akoko Edo II Constituency.

Osawaru, a member of the National Democratic Congress, previously served as Deputy Majority Leader before assuming her new position.

Reacting to her appointment, Osawaru said the new role represented a responsibility to the people rather than simply a political title.

In a statement posted on her Facebook page, she pledged to continue representing her constituents while contributing to the development of Edo State.

“This new responsibility is not a title; it is a trust,” she said.

Osawaru said democratic governance required constructive debate, accountability and the willingness to defend the interests of ordinary citizens.

She also reaffirmed her commitment to her constituency, her party and the state.

“As Minority Leader, my commitment to the development of Edo State, the progress of our great party, the NDC, and the prosperity of the good people of Egor remains absolute,” she said.

A statement issued on her appointment said her elevation reflected the confidence placed in her by her colleagues and constituents.

It also highlighted her previous experience as Deputy Majority Leader, describing her as a lawmaker who had demonstrated that effective leadership could extend beyond partisan interests.

Osawaru married 2Baba in July 2025 following the singer’s separation from his former wife, Annie Macaulay Idibia.

The couple later welcomed their first child together and held a dedication ceremony for the child in February.
