The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a teacher, Jacob Irewa, for allegedly pouring petrol on his wife, Berida Irawo, and setting her ablaze during a domestic dispute in Lokoja.
The Command’s spokesperson, Afusat Saliu, confirmed the arrest, saying the incident occurred on Friday, August 14, at about 8:30 p.m. at the couple’s residence in Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja.

According to the police, preliminary investigation indicates that the incident followed a disagreement after the victim allegedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes without his permission.
Saliu said the suspect subsequently fetched petrol from his motorcycle, poured it on his wife and set her on fire.
The victim survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital in Felele.
The police spokesperson said the suspect admitted to the act in his statement to investigators, while the Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The police said the suspect claimed he became angry after discovering that seven of his shirts were missing and his wife told him she had burnt them because she believed he was no longer using them.

The suspect, who reportedly described himself as an ordained pastor and teacher, is said to have been on vacation in Lokoja at the time of the incident.
The Kogi State Police Command said an investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged attack and gather further evidence.
