The Anambra State Police Command has recovered two locally fabricated pistols and three caps bearing an inscription associated with the Vikings Confraternity from an abandoned motorcycle in Awka North Local Government Area.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying the items were recovered during a routine patrol by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit.
According to him, the officers were patrolling along the Isuaniocha Bridge on Thursday when they spotted two young men riding a black Sanyang motorcycle without a registration number.
Ikenga said the suspects suddenly made a reckless turn after sighting the police team, prompting the officers to pursue them.
He said the suspects eventually fell from the motorcycle during the chase and abandoned it, along with two slippers and a bag, before fleeing into a nearby bush.
A search of the abandoned bag, he said, led to the recovery of two locally fabricated pistols and three caps bearing an inscription associated with the Vikings Confraternity.
“The suspects, on sighting the Police team, suddenly and recklessly turned the motorcycle in an apparent attempt to evade the operatives,” the statement said.
“During the pursuit, the suspects fell from the motorcycle and abandoned it, together with two slippers and a bag, before fleeing into a nearby bush.”
The police spokesperson said the recovery was another significant achievement recorded by the command in its efforts to combat violent crime and cult-related activities in the state.
He said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and establish their identities, affiliations and the circumstances surrounding their possession of the recovered items.
The command urged residents to remain vigilant and provide security agencies with useful information that could assist in preventing crime and apprehending criminal suspects.
