The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the public holiday on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary and urged citizens to reflect on the sacrifices and contributions of the country’s founding fathers and other national figures who worked towards Nigeria’s independence.
The minister described Nigeria’s diversity, human resources and natural wealth as important national assets capable of contributing to the country’s development.
He called on Nigerians to continue promoting peace, unity and political stability while working collectively towards building a stronger and more prosperous country.

Tunji-Ojo expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future and urged citizens to remain committed to the country’s progress.
Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960.
Thursday’s commemoration marks 66 years since the country attained independence.
