The United States government has revoked more than 175,000 visas issued to foreign nationals under President Donald Trump’s administration, citing alleged criminal conduct, visa violations and national security concerns.
The US Department of State announced the figure in a statement on Monday, saying most of the visa cancellations followed law-enforcement encounters involving criminal activity.
The department said the offences included assault, driving under the influence, theft and drug-related crimes, while other cases involved reckless driving, sexual assault, child abuse, fraud and embezzlement.
It stated that the revocations were part of an ongoing vetting programme aimed at ensuring that visa holders comply with US immigration rules and do not pose a threat to public safety or national security.
According to the department, some of the cases involved serious allegations, including rape, sexual battery, kidnapping, human trafficking, sexual exploitation of minors, child sexual abuse and domestic violence.
The State Department also disclosed that a US embassy in North Africa revoked more than 100 visas belonging to parents accused of engaging in “birth tourism” — travelling to the United States primarily to give birth so their children could obtain US citizenship.
The department cited several individual cases to illustrate the enforcement action.
In one case, a foreign national was arrested for allegedly driving with heroin while having a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit.
Another foreign national was accused of helping to coordinate a Medicaid fraud scheme involving more than $5 million in fraudulent billing after allegedly presenting himself as the operator of a legitimate healthcare-access business.
The department also said another foreign national allegedly falsified company revenue figures and forged letters to deceive investors and fraudulently obtain a US visa.
Some visa revocations were also linked to alleged statements celebrating or endorsing the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, according to the department.
The State Department said Secretstated thatof State Marco Rubio had separately determined that several foreign nationals were deportable on foreign-polhose ca of foreign policyses, it said, included a Cuban national allegedly connected to an influence operation linked to Cuba’s communist government, Iranian nationals allegedly tied to the Iranian government, a Laotian child-sex offender who was pardoned by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and a Kuwaiti national accused of expressing a desire for violence against the US president.
The department said it would continue to identify, investigate and revoke the visas of foreign nationals it considers threats to public safety and US national security.
“A U.S. visa is a privilege, not a right,” the department said, adding that the administration would use available measures to protect American communities from individuals who abuse the immigration system.
