Ukraine has denied deliberately targeting Bulgaria after a drone carrying explosives exploded near the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline close to the Romanian border.

Bulgaria’s Defence Ministry said the drone was a type widely used by the Ukrainian military, but added that there was currently no evidence the incident was deliberate.

The explosion occurred about one kilometre from a gas pipeline compressor station and caused no casualties, although Bulgarian authorities said the drone was carrying a significant amount of explosives.

Ukraine said its armed forces did not intentionally direct any assets toward Bulgaria and pledged to work with Bulgarian authorities to clarify the incident.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said the country has increased surveillance and will redeploy troops to its borders to strengthen drone detection and counter-drone measures.
