The Nigeria Police Force says it has recorded a breakthrough in the investigation into the killing of the traditional ruler of Ochia Kingdom in Imo State, HRH Eze Paulinus Ekwueme, and five others.
The breakthrough followed intelligence-led operations by operatives of the Special Tactics Squad and Force Intelligence Department in Ohaji/Egbema between August 2 and 6.
Police said a suspected gang leader, Ojiogu Elumah Martin, also known as “Acid,” was killed during a gun battle with operatives at his hideout in the early hours of August 6.
An AK-47 rifle, three magazines and 56 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from the scene.
The Police identified the suspect as an alleged leader of the criminal syndicate linked to the April 10 attack along the Asa/Awara Road, in which the monarch and five others were killed while returning to Owerri.
Four suspects had earlier been arrested, while two others reportedly died during previous encounters with security operatives.
The Police said efforts are ongoing to arrest other fleeing members of the syndicate and recover further evidence as investigations continue.
