Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has called on Nigerian leaders at all levels to embrace people-centred governance, institutional integrity and inclusive leadership as pathways to addressing the nation’s socio-economic challenges.
Governor Eno made the call while delivering a keynote address as Special Guest at the Centenary Anniversary Celebration of the Yoruba Tennis Club in Onikan, Lagos.
Speaking on the theme DEMOCRACY AND THE IMPERATIVE OF GOOD GOVERNANCE: RENEWING HOPE IN CHALLENGING TIMES, the governor noted that the true success of democracy is measured by the extent to which it improves the lives of citizens through practical policies, economic opportunities and improved standards of living.
He emphasised that leadership must go beyond political promises to delivering tangible socio-economic benefits while rebuilding citizens’ confidence in public institutions through transparency, accountability and responsible governance.
Highlighting the development strides of his administration, Governor Eno said the Akwa Ibom State Government’s ARISE Agenda was designed as a people-focused blueprint aimed at transforming lives through agriculture, rural infrastructure development, human capital empowerment and enhanced security.
According to him, sustainable development requires a deliberate commitment to policies that place citizens at the centre of governance, particularly in addressing poverty and creating opportunities for economic advancement.
The governor also stressed the need for systemic renewal across the country, noting that effective leadership must be supported by strong institutions, integrity in public service and collaboration beyond political affiliations.
He urged political leaders to rise above regional and partisan interests, advocating for a governance approach driven by compassion, fairness and a commitment to serving humanity.
“Leadership must be about service and improving the quality of life of the people.
“At this time of national challenges, leaders must work together and build systems that restore hope and create opportunities for all Nigerians,” Governor Eno said.
The lecture, which formed part of the Yoruba Tennis Club’s year-long centenary celebration themed, “A Century at the Forefront of History and Tradition,” attracted dignitaries including Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the immediate past Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Emmanuel, CON.
Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the Yoruba Tennis Club for its remarkable contribution to national conversations and for sustaining its legacy as a platform for civic engagement and intellectual discourse since its establishment in 1926.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Club’s Board of Trustees, Alhaji Femi Okunnu, SAN, and Chairman of the Club, Olawunmi Gasper, noted that the lecture series was part of the club’s tradition of promoting dialogue on issues affecting Nigeria’s growth and development.
The General Secretary of the club, Lookman Kotun, said the centenary seminar provides an avenue to reflect on Nigeria’s past, examine present realities and explore solutions for the country’s democratic future.
The Yoruba Tennis Club, founded in 1926, remains one of West Africa’s oldest and most influential social institutions, with a long-standing history of contributing to Nigeria’s cultural, intellectual and civic development.
