Six people have been killed after a speeding car crashed into traders and commercial motorcyclists at Umuikaa Junction in Isiala South Local Government Area of Abia State.
The accident occurred on Tuesday along the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway.
Seven other people sustained various degrees of injuries, while six motorcycles were reportedly damaged in the crash.
The black Toyota car was said to have been travelling from the Umuahia end of the road when the driver reportedly lost control and veered into traders at the junction.
Several of the victims were female traders.
The vehicle also crashed into commercial motorcyclists who were at the junction conducting their businesses before eventually ramming into a building.
The victims who died were evacuated to a mortuary after being confirmed dead, while those injured were taken to a hospital for urgent medical attention.
The official cause of the crash had not been established as of Wednesday, although residents suggested that speeding or possible brake failure may have contributed to the accident.
When contacted, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Abia State, C.C. Ngozi Ezeoma, confirmed the incident.
“Yes, it happened at Umuikaa Junction,” Ezeoma said.
Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to determine the precise cause of the crash.
