The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested one suspect following the alleged killing of a 30-year-old woman, Habse Ubale, in a witchcraft-related attack in Garin Malam Village, Gamawa Local Government Area of the state.
Police said the incident occurred in the early hours of July 28, 2026, after the suspects allegedly accused the deceased of being a witch before attacking her family.
According to the Command, the prime suspect, Garba Daudu, allegedly conspired with two others, identified as Ya’u Garba and Musa, to invade the residence of Audu Sabo, where Habse Ubale was attacked with a machete. Audu Sabo and two minors, Sale Audu, 12, and Yakubu Audu, 14, were also reportedly assaulted with sticks, sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
Police operatives, supported by local hunters and vigilantes, responded to the incident and evacuated the victims to the General Hospital in Gamawa. Habse Ubale was confirmed dead by doctors, while one victim remains on admission, and the two other injured victims were treated and discharged.
The Police Command said one suspect has been arrested, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the two remaining suspects who fled the community.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the attack, warning against jungle justice and violence driven by superstition.
He assured residents that the Command remains committed to ensuring justice and urged members of the public to provide credible information that could assist in arresting the fleeing suspects.
