The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has called on the Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Charles Wobodo, to withdraw a directive requiring communities and youth groups to obtain council approval before holding public gatherings.
In a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Chizy Enyi, the party argued that the directive could infringe on citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of association and political participation.
While acknowledging the need to address insecurity in Ikwerre LGA, the ADC maintained that security measures should not be used to restrict lawful political activities.
The party also expressed concern that similar directives could be introduced in other local government areas ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It urged the Rivers State Commissioner of Police and other security agencies to ensure that all registered political parties are allowed to conduct lawful political activities without interference.
Last week, Ikwerre Local Government Chairman, Charles Wobodo, reiterated that the ban on youth elections in the council area remains in force and directed that community youth groups must obtain approval from the local government before organising any public gathering.
