At least 35 people have been confirmed dead following a collision involving two passenger buses in central-eastern Syria, according to state media.
The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), citing a Health Ministry official, reported on Saturday that the accident also left 30 others injured. The crash occurred along the Damascus–Deir Ezzor highway between the Sukhna and Palmyra areas.
According to Syria’s Interior Ministry, one of the buses was transporting security personnel, while the other carried civilian passengers. However, authorities did not disclose how many of those killed or injured were members of the security forces.
Footage aired by state media showed one of the buses engulfed in flames, with wreckage scattered across the highway as emergency responders worked at the scene.
The latest tragedy adds to a series of deadly road accidents recorded in Syria in recent months.
Earlier this month, five people, most of them Lebanese pilgrims returning from Saudi Arabia, lost their lives when a bus overturned on a highway in Daraa Province. Dozens of others sustained injuries, with local authorities suggesting excessive speed may have contributed to the crash.
Years of civil war and prolonged neglect have left much of Syria’s transport infrastructure in poor condition, with many roads requiring urgent repairs.
It could be recalled that in another fatal incident last year, at least 12 people were killed and several others injured after a passenger bus collided with an oil tanker in northeastern Syria.
