The Federal Government of Nigeria has flagged off the rehabilitation of the Bama-Banki Road and the Dikwa-Gamboru-Ngala Road in Borno State as part of efforts to restore trade, improve security and accelerate post-insurgency recovery in the North-East.
Performing the flag-off on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima described the projects as critical economic and security corridors that will reconnect communities, boost cross-border commerce and improve access for security agencies.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice President said road infrastructure remains central to economic development, noting that improved roads would ease the movement of agricultural produce, facilitate trade, enhance access to healthcare and education, and strengthen security operations across the region.
He stressed that poor road networks increase the cost of doing business, isolate communities and undermine economic productivity, adding that the rehabilitation of the two roads is part of the Tinubu administration’s commitment to rebuilding the North-East.

Shettima said the projects would include reinforced concrete pavements, bridges, drainage systems and other supporting infrastructure to ensure durability and value for public funds.
He commended Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, for prioritising infrastructure development and pledged that the Federal Government would ensure the projects are completed.
Governor Zulum said the roads would enhance economic activities in Borno State and strengthen trade with neighbouring Chad, Cameroon and Niger Republic. He thanked President Tinubu for his continued support for the development and security of the North-East.
Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, disclosed that the projects, initially awarded in 2021, are now valued at over ₦70 billion and ₦67 billion respectively for the first phase, assuring that the Federal Government is committed to completing abandoned infrastructure projects across the country.

Chairman of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, whose company is partnering with the Federal Government through tax credit financing, said the roads would enhance regional connectivity and facilitate trade between Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
Meanwhile, Vice President Shettima also attended the wedding fatiha of the children of two of his associates in Maiduguri, where he prayed for the couples and wished them successful and fulfilling married lives.
