The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to replace the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) traditional khaki uniform with locally produced Adire fabric as part of ongoing reforms aimed at promoting indigenous industries.

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed the development on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.

According to the minister, the decision aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting local production and ensuring that public spending contributes directly to the growth of Nigeria’s economy.

“It’s Adire. Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, and we have a textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country,” Olawande said.

He explained that the initiative is expected to stimulate Nigeria’s textile industry, create jobs, and encourage the patronage of locally made products through government procurement.

The minister noted that the reform goes beyond a change of uniform, describing it as part of a broader strategy to strengthen local craftsmanship and expand opportunities for indigenous manufacturers.

Olawande also revealed that the Federal Government is reviewing the NYSC deployment process to ensure corps members are posted in line with their academic qualifications and professional expertise.

According to him, the restructuring is intended to improve workforce development by placing graduates in roles where their skills can make greater contributions to national development.

The proposed reforms form part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to reposition the NYSC scheme and enhance its relevance to Nigeria’s economic and human capital development.
