A conductor attached to a commercial bus has been taken into custody following an alleged stabbing attack on a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer during a routine enforcement operation on Monday.

The incident took place at Ile-Epo Market, along the Abule-Egba section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, when LASTMA officials moved to address a traffic obstruction caused by a Volkswagen commercial bus bearing registration number LSR 989 XG.

According to officials, the bus driver resisted the enforcement team’s attempts to address the violation. During the ensuing altercation, the vehicle’s conductor identified as Lekan Olasunkanmi allegedly produced a screwdriver and stabbed one of the officers.

The wounded officer was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and is said to be responding well to care. The case was subsequently reported to the Abattoir Police Division, where the suspect was taken into custody pending further investigation and possible prosecution.

During questioning, the suspect reportedly acknowledged having the screwdriver but claimed the stabbing was unintentional, occurring in the heat of the confrontation.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, denounced the assault, describing it as part of a worrying pattern of hostility directed at traffic officials carrying out their duties. He warned that the state government would not tolerate violence, intimidation or harassment against personnel deployed to maintain order on Lagos roads.

“Anyone found attacking LASTMA personnel in the course of their lawful duties will face the full weight of the law,” Bakare-Oki said, adding that officers are stationed across the state to ensure smooth movement of people and goods while enforcing traffic regulations. He stressed that any act of violence against them undermines public order and would be met with consequences.

Bakare-Oki appealed to motorists, commercial vehicle operators and other road users to comply with provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, describing cooperation with traffic authorities as essential to building a safer and more orderly transport system.

He also called on transport unions and vehicle operators to educate their members on the importance of respecting law enforcement and traffic personnel.
