One person was killed, another critically injured following a shooting at San Pedro Square, a popular entertainment district in San Jose, California, that has been serving as an official FIFA World Cup fan zone, authorities said.

The incident occurred on Sunday at the fan zone, although police clarified that no World Cup match was being broadcast at the time.

The day’s only tournament fixture had concluded at about 2 p.m. local time before the shooting took place.

According to the San Jose Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire at San Pedro Square and found two victims upon arrival.

One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police have launched a homicide investigation and cordoned off several streets surrounding the entertainment district as detectives examined the scene and gathered evidence.

Authorities have not announced any arrests or identified a possible motive for the shooting.

Investigators continued collecting evidence while interviewing witnesses and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the attack.

San Pedro Square is one of several official FIFA World Cup fan zones established across the San Francisco Bay Area, where thousands of football supporters have gathered throughout the tournament to watch matches on giant outdoor screens.

The Bay Area has already hosted several World Cup fixtures, including a recent knockout-round match between Bosnia and co-hosts the United States.

Witnesses reported a heavy police and emergency response shortly after the shooting, with multiple patrol vehicles and paramedics arriving at the scene.

One eyewitness said emergency personnel transported one of the victims on a stretcher while officers secured the area with police tape.

A security guard who witnessed the aftermath said the surviving victim appeared to have sustained serious injuries.

“The person was still conscious and in visible pain. There was blood around the neck and upper back,” the witness said, adding that investigators questioned security personnel and other witnesses as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police said inquiries are continuing and urged anyone with information that could assist investigators to come forward.
