The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a pastor and the mother of a 13-year-old girl who allegedly died after being flogged over accusations of stealing ₦30,000.

The deceased, identified as Nancy Peter, reportedly died after she was taken to her pastor for disciplinary action at Obanleku Community in Boki Local Government Area of the state.

According to police sources, the incident occurred on June 1 after Nancy’s mother, Agnes Peter, accused her of taking ₦30,000 from their home and took her to the residence of the General Overseer of Goodness of Jesus Ministry, Roman Samson.

The pastor allegedly flogged the teenager with a horsewhip before she became unconscious. She was rushed to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead.

Speaking to investigators, the girl’s mother said she only took her daughter to the pastor for counselling and prayers and did not ask that she be beaten to death.

She said the missing money was later recovered from one of the girl’s trousers after the teenager admitted taking it.

The pastor admitted flogging the deceased but denied intending to kill her, claiming he administered between 13 and 15 strokes of a horsewhip at the mother’s request before noticing that the girl had become weak.

He said he immediately rushed her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The spokesman of the Cross River State Police Command, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, confirmed the arrest of both the pastor and the mother, saying investigations were ongoing.

He assured that the command would conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that justice is served.
