French health authorities have confirmed the country’s first recorded case of Ebola virus disease, involving a medical doctor who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where an outbreak of the disease is ongoing.

The French Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday that the case marks the first confirmed Ebola infection detected within French territory and the first case reported outside Africa during the current outbreak affecting parts of the DRC and Uganda.

According to the ministry, the patient was identified and isolated immediately upon arrival in France, before laboratory tests officially confirmed the infection.

Authorities said the individual is a doctor who had recently travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is currently battling its 17th recorded Ebola outbreak.

Government officials indicated that the patient is being managed under strict health and safety protocols designed to prevent any potential spread of the virus.

The office of Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu stated that the government is closely monitoring the situation and working with public health agencies to ensure an effective response.

Although France previously received Ebola patients during the 2014 West African outbreak, those individuals had already been diagnosed before being transported to the country. The latest case is the first to be officially detected on French soil.

The current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo was declared on May 15 following a series of unexplained deaths in Ituri Province, an eastern region of the country.

Health authorities have identified the outbreak as being caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment.

Despite concerns surrounding the disease, public health experts maintain that the risk of widespread international transmission remains relatively low due to the virus’s limited ability to spread compared to many respiratory infections.

Ebola is a severe viral haemorrhagic disease that can cause fever, fatigue, internal bleeding and organ failure. The virus spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals or contaminated materials.

French health officials have assured the public that necessary measures are in place to contain the case and monitor any potential contacts as part of ongoing disease surveillance efforts.
