Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti has argued that his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, benefited significantly from his privileged upbringing, stating that the legendary artiste’s background played a crucial role in shaping his remarkable career.
Speaking during a recent interview, Seun noted that Fela’s status as the son of renowned nationalist, educator and women’s rights activist, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, provided him with opportunities and exposure that contributed to his success.
According to the Grammy-nominated singer, achievements are often influenced by circumstances and support systems, stressing that Fela’s story was no exception.

He explained that while his father enjoyed certain advantages because of his family background, his success was ultimately sustained by hard work, determination and resilience.
Seun said members of the Kuti family are raised with the understanding that personal effort remains essential regardless of any privileges they may enjoy.
Reflecting on the impact of family legacy, he acknowledged that being associated with a famous name can create opportunities but also comes with heightened expectations and pressure.
The musician noted that although his father’s reputation may open doors for him, it does not guarantee success in his career. He emphasised that he must still earn recognition through his own talent, performances and creative output.

Seun further explained that children of accomplished public figures are often expected to match the achievements of their predecessors, leaving little room for gradual growth or development.
He said the burden of meeting established standards can be challenging, as audiences and industry stakeholders frequently assume that greatness should come naturally because of family heritage.
