The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has condemned the remand of activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre, describing the development as a dangerous setback for Nigeria’s democracy.

Obi made his position known in a statement on Tuesday following a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja that ordered Sowore’s remand pending the determination of an application seeking a stay of execution of an earlier order revoking his bail.

The former Anambra State governor expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend that could create the impression that state institutions are being used to suppress dissenting voices and civic engagement.

According to Obi, democracy thrives on the protection of fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, rather than the silencing of critics.

He stressed that safeguarding civic freedoms remains essential to sustaining democratic governance and accountability in the country.

Obi further warned that continued pressure on activists, journalists and government critics could erode public confidence in democratic institutions, especially at a time when Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship and security challenges.

He cautioned against treating critics of government policies as threats to national stability, noting that such actions could signal a drift toward authoritarianism.

The former presidential candidate urged authorities to uphold constitutional rights, respect due process and ensure that democratic institutions remain strong and independent.

Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has also criticised Sowore’s detention, calling for his immediate release and the withdrawal of charges against him.

Sowore was remanded by the Federal High Court in Abuja after Justice Mohammed Umar ordered his detention pending the hearing of an application related to the revocation of his bail. The court also dismissed an application seeking the judge’s recusal from the case over allegations of bias.
