The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olaka Nwogu, winner of the Rivers South East Senatorial District bye-election conducted on Saturday.
The result was announced by the Returning Officer for the election, Professor Rosemary Ogu, at the Rivers South East Senatorial Collation Centre located at the Khana Local Government Council Secretariat in Bori, Rivers State.
According to the official results released by INEC, Nwogu secured 46,961 votes to emerge victorious in the keenly contested poll.

The PDP candidate defeated his closest challenger, Osarokaka Ebenezer Erewari of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 1,647 votes.
Professor Ogu subsequently declared Nwogu, also known as Olaka Johnson Nwogu, the duly elected senator representing Rivers South East Senatorial District, having scored the highest number of valid votes cast and satisfied the requirements of the law.
The victory marks a significant political gain for the PDP in the senatorial district and further strengthens the party’s hold on the constituency.
Nwogu is regarded as a political ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and his emergence is expected to bolster the PDP’s representation in the National Assembly.

The bye-election was conducted by INEC to fill the vacant Senate seat for Rivers South East Senatorial District.
The election was monitored by electoral officials, security agencies and observers, with collation of results concluding at the senatorial district collation centre in Bori.
