President Donald Trump has reignited debate over U.S. immigration enforcement after publicly backing a proposal to rename the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) as the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which would change its acronym to “NICE.”

Trump endorsed the idea in a post on Truth Social after sharing a suggestion from a supporter who argued that the rebranding would force media outlets to refer to immigration officers as “NICE agents.” Responding to the proposal, Trump wrote, “GREAT IDEA!!! DO IT.”

The proposal emerged amid continued scrutiny of ICE’s enforcement activities and growing public debate over immigration policies under Trump’s administration. Supporters view the suggested name change as a way to improve the agency’s public image, while critics have dismissed it as a public relations exercise that does not address concerns surrounding immigration enforcement practices.

Reports indicate that discussions about the rebranding have taken place within the White House and the Department of Homeland Security. However, no formal action has been taken to change the agency’s name. Analysts note that any official renaming could require administrative and legal processes, with questions remaining over whether congressional approval would be necessary.

While Trump has publicly expressed support for the “NICE” branding, the proposal remains under consideration and has not been implemented.
