Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has humorously commented on Neymar’s continued absence from action at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the football star as a player “working remotely” while with the national team.

Lula remarked during an event at a hospital in Belo Horizonte, where he interacted with members of the public and answered questions about Brazil’s national team.

The light-hearted comment came after a young boy mentioned Neymar’s name during the ceremony. Responding with a smile, the Brazilian leader noted that the forward has yet to feature for the Seleção at the tournament.

“Neymar is not even playing,” Lula said. “He is probably the first footballer ever called up to the national team and still working remotely.”

The 34-year-old forward recently returned to training after recovering from a calf injury that sidelined him ahead of the competition. Although he has rejoined the squad, head coach Carlo Ancelotti has not included him in the team for Brazil’s second Group C match against Haiti.

Neymar also missed Brazil’s opening fixture, a 1-1 draw against Morocco, as he continued his recovery programme.

Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 international goals remains one of the country’s most influential football figures, and fans are eagerly awaiting his return to competitive action as the tournament progresses.

While Neymar’s fitness continues to be monitored, Brazil will be hoping to secure its first victory of the World Cup when it faces Haiti, with Ancelotti expected to rely on the players currently available in his squad.
