Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has responded to singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, after the music star referred to him as “Bingo” in a social media post.

The exchange followed Omokri’s recent remarks explaining that his delayed resumption of duty in Mexico was due to the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

Reacting to the statement, Davido took to social media and posted a message directed at Omokri, describing him as “Bingo” and using other derogatory language. The post quickly gained attention online.

In a response shared on his Instagram page on Tuesday, Omokri described Davido’s reaction as unexpected and expressed disappointment over the singer’s choice of words.

According to Omokri, Davido’s criticism may have stemmed from an earlier disagreement over the singer’s decision to wear a customised jacket bearing the names of abducted schoolchildren from Oyo State during a World Cup-related event.

Addressing the singer directly, Omokri wrote that while he appreciated the feedback, he was surprised by the insult, noting that such language was unbecoming of an international celebrity.

He argued that although Davido’s intention may have been to draw attention to the plight of the kidnapped children and pressure authorities into action, using a global platform to highlight the issue could inadvertently amplify the publicity sought by criminal groups.

Omokri maintained that widespread attention to such incidents could contribute to fear and potentially aid the objectives of bandits and terrorists.

Drawing a comparison, he cited American content creator IShowSpeed, who attended the same event and used the occasion to promote Nigeria positively by wearing the country’s jersey and speaking favourably about the nation.
