The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced the selection of former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 general election.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, who said the decision followed consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and representatives from the country’s geopolitical zones.
According to the ADC, Amaechi’s emergence as vice-presidential candidate followed the conclusion of the party’s presidential primary, where he reportedly finished as runner-up and secured significant support from party members across the federation.

The party described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a strategic alliance aimed at addressing Nigeria’s economic, security and governance challenges.
In the statement, the ADC highlighted Amaechi’s political experience, noting that he served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State for two terms, and later Minister of Transportation in the Federal Executive Council.
The party said Amaechi’s experience in both the legislative and executive arms of government would strengthen the ticket and contribute to effective governance if elected.
The ADC also argued that Amaechi’s political influence in the South-South region and across Southern Nigeria would complement Atiku’s candidacy and help broaden the party’s national appeal ahead of the 2027 election.

“The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges,” the statement said.
The party called on its members, coalition partners, civil society organisations, youth and women groups, and other Nigerians to support the ticket as preparations intensify for the next general election.
The announcement comes as political parties continue consultations and coalition-building efforts ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
