The installation of natural grass pitches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has reignited debate among NFL players, many of whom have long campaigned for grass surfaces in American football stadiums.

As World Cup matches get underway across the United States, Canada and Mexico, several NFL venues that normally feature synthetic turf have been temporarily converted to natural grass to meet FIFA’s strict competition standards. The move has left many players questioning why similar investments have not been made for athletes who use the stadiums throughout the NFL season.

One such venue is SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, home to the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. Like several other NFL stadiums, it underwent a significant transformation to accommodate FIFA’s requirement for predominantly natural grass playing surfaces.

New York Giants offensive lineman Jermaine Eluemunor expressed frustration over the situation, noting that players have consistently advocated for grass fields because of their impact on performance and recovery.

According to Eluemunor, grass surfaces place less strain on players’ bodies, particularly the knees, ankles and lower back. He argued that despite the NFL’s enormous financial strength, players have had limited influence over decisions regarding playing surfaces.

Recent surveys conducted by the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) indicate overwhelming support for grass fields among players, with more than 90 percent favoring natural surfaces over synthetic turf.

The NFL, however, maintains that field quality and safety standards are more important than surface type alone. League officials say venue operators must meet agreed performance requirements and that factors such as weather conditions, stadium design and multi-purpose usage complicate a league-wide transition to natural grass.

The World Cup fields are the result of years of research and significant investment by FIFA. Turfgrass experts developed specialised grass blends tailored to different climates, while extensive logistics were employed to cultivate, transport and install the surfaces across all 16 host venues.

Researchers involved in the project say similar systems could be adopted by the NFL, though doing so would require substantial financial commitment and long-term planning.

The NFLPA argues that the World Cup has demonstrated that large-scale natural grass installations are both achievable and practical. Union representatives contend that NFL players deserve the same level of investment in field quality as athletes competing in soccer’s premier tournament.

League officials disagree, insisting that the temporary World Cup setup does not necessarily prove natural grass can withstand the demands of a full NFL season, especially in stadiums that host concerts and other events alongside football games.

Despite the debate, some NFL franchises have already embraced innovative grass solutions. The Miami Dolphins operate a dedicated sod farm to maintain field quality, while the Las Vegas Raiders use a movable natural grass field that can be rolled in and out of Allegiant Stadium for different events.

International NFL games have also exposed players to high-quality natural grass venues. Eluemunor recalled that one of the best playing surfaces of his career was at Germany’s Allianz Arena during a Giants game in 2024.

For many players, the issue ultimately comes down to health and safety. They argue that while maintaining natural grass may be expensive, the investment is worthwhile if it enhances player comfort, reduces physical stress and provides greater confidence on game day.
