The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed concern over what it described as the “continued struggle of democracy” in Nigeria, 33 years after the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the party said the June 12 election remains a symbol of national unity and democratic aspiration, noting that Nigerians once set aside ethnic and regional divisions to vote for progress.
The party also recalled the resistance that followed the annulment of the election, which it said came at a high human cost in the country’s democratic journey.

According to the PDP, 33 years after that historic event, Nigeria is still confronted with challenges that threaten democratic consolidation, including alleged restrictions on civil liberties and opposition rights.
The party called on the Federal Government to uphold democratic values by guaranteeing the rights to peaceful assembly and protest, and ensuring fairness and transparency in governance and electoral processes.
It also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain strict impartiality and credibility, describing its role as critical to the survival of democracy in the country.
The PDP, however, alleged that under the current All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration, the lessons of June 12 have not been fully embraced.
It cited reports of alleged police action against protesters in Abuja during Democracy Day activities, including claims that activist Omoyele Sowore was injured while participating in a demonstration calling for the release of abducted schoolchildren and teachers.
The party described such incidents as unfortunate, arguing that governance should prioritise effective policy responses over what it termed propaganda and image management.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the PDP urged citizens to remain vigilant and committed to defending democratic institutions, warning that the sacrifices of past democratic heroes must not be forgotten or reduced to ceremonial observances.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democracy, protecting civil rights, and promoting accountable governance in Nigeria.
