The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed that five of its personnel were among those injured in a train derailment incident at Owa-Oyibu in Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State.

The State Commandant, Chinedu Igbo, disclosed this on Thursday during an on-the-spot assessment visit to the accident scene, where he evaluated the extent of damage and ongoing recovery efforts.

According to him, NSCDC operatives were part of a security escort team aboard the train when the derailment occurred, leaving several passengers and officers injured.

“The purpose of the visit was to assess the incident, evaluate the circumstances surrounding the derailment, monitor ongoing recovery efforts, and ensure adequate security coverage at the affected location,” Igbo said.

He confirmed that the injured personnel, along with other victims, are currently receiving treatment at the Central Hospital in Agbor.

“My team also visited injured victims, including five NSCDC personnel who were part of the train escort team and were affected by the accident. They are currently receiving medical attention,” he added.

The Commandant assured the public that the corps, in collaboration with other security agencies, remains committed to safeguarding lives and critical infrastructure along the railway corridor.

He noted that significant damage was observed on sections of the train coaches and rail tracks, while railway engineers have begun technical assessments to determine the cause of the derailment.

Igbo added that security agencies, railway officials, and technical experts are working together as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He expressed sympathy to the injured officers and passengers, reaffirming the commitment of the NSCDC to railway security and public safety across Delta State.
