President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is holding closed-door talks with Madagascar’s President, Michaël Randrianirina, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Randrianirina arrived at Aso Rock Presidential Villa on Sunday afternoon and was received by a delegation led by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, before proceeding to a private meeting with President Tinubu.

The visit marks Randrianirina’s first official trip to Nigeria since assuming office in October 2025 following the political transition that succeeded former Malagasy President Andry Rajoelina.

It is also regarded as the first recorded official visit by a sitting Malagasy head of state to Nigeria, as previous engagements between leaders of both countries largely occurred during multilateral meetings and international summits.

The meeting follows an earlier interaction between Tinubu and Randrianirina at the Africa Forward Summit held in Nairobi, Kenya, in May.

While details of the discussions have not been officially disclosed, the talks are expected to focus on areas of mutual interest, including regional security cooperation, agricultural development, trade relations, and strategies to address the effects of climate change, which has recently impacted parts of Madagascar.

More details will be published as they unfold…
