Associates of former President Goodluck Jonathan have insisted that only the former Nigerian leader can authoritatively speak on his political future, amid renewed speculation over his possible involvement in the 2027 presidential race.
The clarification follows growing public debate triggered by recent comments attributed to a former presidential aide, who reportedly dismissed suggestions that Jonathan could return to active electoral politics ahead of the next general election.
Responding to the development, a pro-Jonathan group, The Goodies Movement, cautioned against individuals making definitive statements on behalf of the former president without clear authorisation.

In a statement issued by the group’s coordinator, Sam Presto, supporters and stakeholders within Jonathan’s political circle questioned whether comments credited to former aide Jude Imagwe reflected a personal opinion or an officially sanctioned position.
According to the group, only statements issued directly by Jonathan, through recognised representatives or approved communication channels, should be regarded as an accurate reflection of his political intentions.
The group also urged media organisations to exercise caution when attributing political positions to former leaders, stressing the need to verify the authority of individuals presented as spokespersons.
“Only statements issued directly by him, through officially designated representatives, or via recognised communication channels should be regarded as definitive expressions of his political position,” the statement said.
The group maintained that endorsements, denials, confirmations or speculations regarding Jonathan’s future political plans should be treated as personal opinions unless backed by an official mandate.

It added that Nigerians deserve clarity and factual information rather than assumptions and political conjecture concerning the former president’s next move.
The latest intervention comes amid increasing political realignments and discussions ahead of the 2027 elections, with Jonathan’s name continuing to feature in conversations about possible presidential contenders.
However, his associates insist that until the former president personally makes his intentions known, any claim regarding his political future remains speculative.
