Osun State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation following the shooting of the Chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area, Asimiyu Ajibola, popularly known as Baba Isila, who was attacked by suspected gunmen on Wednesday night.

The incident, which is being treated as an attempted murder, occurred at about 9:50 p.m. around the MDS axis of Osogbo, near the Osogbo Community Bank area, throwing residents into panic as gunshots echoed through the neighbourhood.

Eyewitnesses said the victim was travelling in a blue Toyota Corolla with associates when armed men allegedly opened fire on the vehicle in what appeared to be a coordinated attack.

According to a source in the area, the attackers pursued the vehicle and repeatedly fired at it during the assault.

“The gunmen chased the car and rained bullets on us. It was a coordinated attack,” the source said.

Despite the ambush, the occupants reportedly managed to escape and fled to the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters in Osogbo for protection, after which the attackers fled the scene.

Ajibola was later rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where he is currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the attack.

Reacting to the incident, the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, condemned the shooting and urged security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice.

He described the attack as unfortunate and warned against allowing the matter to go unresolved, noting that early indications suggest possible political undertones.

“We are calling on the police to carry out a professional investigation without fear or favour and ensure those behind this attack are exposed and prosecuted,” he said.

In a statement, the Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident and said it had launched a comprehensive investigation into the shooting.

Police spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said the attack occurred along the MDS area when two armed men on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire on Ajibola’s vehicle.

He said police operatives responded swiftly, evacuated the victim to a medical facility, and deployed tactical teams to track down the fleeing suspects.

According to the Command, Ajibola is in stable condition and responding positively to treatment, while forensic analysis is ongoing on exhibits recovered from the scene.

Osun State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, condemned the attack and ordered a high-level investigation into the incident.

He also directed all relevant tactical and intelligence units to intensify efforts to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for the assault.
