The Rivers State Ministry of Health has reiterated that tobacco use remains one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide and a major contributor to heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and other non-communicable diseases.
Acting Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Vincent Wachukwu, stated this during a press briefing organised to commemorate World No Tobacco Day in partnership with the Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance.
Dr Wachukwu noted that beyond its devastating health effects, tobacco use imposes significant social and economic burdens on families, communities and healthcare systems.

According to him, the Rivers State Government, under the leadership of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, remains committed to strengthening tobacco control measures, promoting public awareness and collaborating with relevant stakeholders to create healthier and safer environments for residents.
He called on Rivers people to reject the use of tobacco and nicotine products, support smoke-free environments and actively advocate for healthier communities.
“The future we seek is one in which every child can grow up free from the influence of tobacco and nicotine addiction,” he stated.
Dr Wachukwu further stressed the importance of collective action in reducing tobacco consumption and protecting future generations from the dangers associated with tobacco and nicotine use.

This year’s World No Tobacco Day is themed, “Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction,” highlighting global efforts to expose tactics used to promote tobacco and nicotine products while encouraging stronger prevention and control measures.
