The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, on Friday led a Nigerian delegation to the International Election Observation Programme (IEOP) for South Korea’s Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections, held from May 29 to June 5, 2026, in Seoul.

The programme brings together election management bodies, experts, and international observers from various countries to monitor the conduct of local government elections in the Republic of Korea and share knowledge on electoral processes.

Prof. Amupitan was accompanied by National Commissioner, Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu; Chief Technical Adviser to the Chairman, Prof. Dimis Mai-Lafia; and Director of Training, Dr Binta Kasim Mohammed.

According to INEC, the participation of its delegation is aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and enhancing understanding of emerging global best practices in election administration, observation, and electoral governance.

The Commission noted that exposure to international electoral systems remains critical to improving Nigeria’s own democratic processes and strengthening transparency and efficiency in future elections.
