A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of threatening to shut down an Abuja event centre billed to host a convention aimed at ratifying former President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential candidacy.

In a press statement issued on Friday, the group alleged that the proprietors of A Class Event Centre in Wuse 2, Abuja, informed them of threats from the FCT Minister warning against allowing the venue to be used for the event.

The statement, signed by Comrade Ini Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary of the Interim National Working Committee of the PDP, insisted that all arrangements for the convention had been duly completed, including full payment for the venue and notification to security agencies.

“We had furnished consideration in full to consummate the earlier offer and acceptance. Furthermore, we had duly notified all relevant security agencies about the event,” the statement read.

The group disclosed that its lawyers had been directed to formally remind the management of the event centre of the existing agreement.

Despite the alleged threats, the organisers maintained that the special convention would hold as scheduled on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at A Class Event Centre, Wuse 2, Abuja, by 10 a.m.

The faction described any attempt to prevent the gathering as an attack on democratic freedoms and political opposition.

“We are certain that Nigeria is a country governed by law, and any attempt to use force to suppress political dissent and opposition is an aberration which must be resisted,” the statement added.

The group also argued that the FCT Minister has no legal authority to determine which political events should be held or where they should take place.

It further invited party leaders, members of the National Executive Committee (NEC), and other stakeholders to attend the convention as planned.

The development comes amid growing controversy over claims of moves to draft former President Goodluck Jonathan into the 2027 presidential race under the PDP platform.
