Human rights activist and former National Human Rights Commission chairman, Chidi Odinkalu, has reacted to the judgment of Justice James Omotosho, who upheld the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) timetable for the 2027 general elections.

Odinkalu, in a post on his official X account, commended the court for the speed of its ruling and the prompt public availability of the judgment.

The Federal High Court decision followed a suit filed by the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which challenged INEC’s deadlines for the submission of candidates by political parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party had argued that the timetable required judicial review, but the court dismissed the objections and affirmed the Electoral Commission’s schedule.

Justice Omotosho ruled that political parties must comply with INEC’s deadlines for the submission of candidates, set for August 26 and September 2026.

The judgment has continued to generate reactions among political stakeholders and observers as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
