Thousands of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa State on Sunday endorsed Mustapha Sule Lamido as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 general election.

The endorsement took place during the party’s governorship primary election held at the M-Town Centre in Dutse, the state capital, with delegates and supporters from the 287 wards across the state in attendance.

Lamido emerged as the sole aspirant in the exercise, which was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), representatives of the PDP national headquarters, security agencies and other stakeholders.

In his acceptance speech, Lamido thanked party members for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to rebuild Jigawa State through accountable leadership and inclusive governance.

“I stand before you today with a heart full of gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility,” he said while accepting the party’s governorship ticket for the 2027 election.

Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, recalled that he contested the 2023 governorship election on the platform of the PDP and campaigned on the ideals of unity, reform and hope for a better Jigawa.

“Though we did not secure victory then, we earned the confidence of hundreds of thousands of our people and laid a strong foundation,” he stated.

He said the party had returned to the race because the state continued to face challenges such as economic hardship, poor governance and insensitive leadership.

The PDP candidate reaffirmed his commitment to his 2023 development agenda, which he said focused on economic growth, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, institutional reforms and social development.

“These are not mere promises; they are a contract with the people, and I intend to see them through,” he said.

Lamido described the condition of the state as worrisome, citing declining standards in education, challenges in the healthcare sector and increasing hardship among residents.

“But let me be clear: we are not here to lament; we are here to fix it,” he declared.

He promised to restore competence in governance, improve public service delivery and create opportunities for citizens across the state.

“We are here to rebuild Jigawa into a state that works for all, where leadership is accountable, resources are managed responsibly, and opportunities are accessible to every citizen,” he added.

Lamido also urged party members to remain united ahead of the 2027 election, stressing that victory would require discipline, commitment and collective effort.

“To the people of Jigawa: I hear you, I see you, and I feel your pains. Allow me to serve you,” he appealed.

He further commended the PDP leadership at both the national and state levels for ensuring a peaceful primary process and congratulated other candidates who emerged during the exercise.
