Suspected terrorists on Saturday night attacked a church vigil at Ori-Oke Ajaiye on the outskirts of Ikiran village in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing three persons and abducting 15 worshippers.

The attack reportedly occurred around 8:30 p.m. while members of the church were observing a night vigil, throwing the community into panic as residents fled in different directions amid gunfire.

Sources in the area said the armed assailants invaded the community in large numbers, targeting worshippers and residents before escaping through nearby forest routes.

Residents were said to have spent the night searching for missing relatives and loved ones following the attack.

“One could hear continuous gunshots as people ran for safety. Some families could not locate their relatives until this morning,” a local source told journalists.

The incident has heightened fear among residents of the affected communities, with concerns over increasing attacks by armed groups in rural areas.

Confirming the development on Sunday, the spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, condemned the attack, describing the killing and abduction of innocent worshippers as gruesome and unacceptable.

She assured residents that security operatives had launched efforts to rescue the abducted victims and track down the perpetrators of the attack.
