The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Cross River State has formally adopted veteran broadcaster, Dr Effiong Nyong, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections following a voice vote conducted at the party’s state secretariat in Calabar.

Party members reportedly converged on Friday at the Diamond Road office where Nyong, the sole aspirant, was affirmed through a voice vote process described by party officials as consistent with electoral guidelines.

The exercise was supervised by the party’s electoral committee chairman, Dr MacFarlane Ejah, who also serves as ADC State Secretary, alongside members of the screening committee led by Dr Minika Bassey and other party stakeholders.

Ejah stated that the process complied with the directives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), stressing that the affirmation was conducted transparently and in line with internal party regulations.

“What we have just done is in consonance with the latest directives of INEC. And so we formally affirmed and unveiled Dr Effiong Efa Nyong as our flag bearer for the 2027 Governorship election in Cross River State,” he said.

In his acceptance remarks, Nyong said his decision to contest the governorship seat for a second time was driven by a desire to address what he described as the state’s declining development trajectory.

He said his ambition was rooted in service to the people and a commitment to reversing what he called increasing poverty and infrastructural decline in the state.

“My decision to vie for the governorship race for the second time is borne out of passion for my people, state, and deep desire to avert the steady slide into retrogression,” he said.

Nyong also reflected on Cross River’s historical significance, noting that the state once held a prominent position in education, governance, and civil service during the colonial era.

He lamented what he described as the deterioration of standards over the years, blaming poor governance for the current socioeconomic challenges facing residents.

“The level of poverty and backwardness is shocking. And so, as a true son, we must come together to lift ourselves out of this trajectory,” he added.

The ADC candidate further raised concerns over multiple taxation in the state, arguing that it has stifled business growth, discouraged investment, and worsened economic hardship for residents.
