Democrats have selected candidates in several critical congressional races ahead of the United States midterm elections, setting the stage for a fierce contest for control of the House of Representatives.
With the party needing a net gain of three seats to reclaim the House majority, Pennsylvania has emerged as one of the most important battlegrounds, where four congressional districts are expected to play a decisive role in determining the balance of power.
In Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District around Allentown, firefighter union leader Bob Brooks secured the Democratic nomination after overcoming a crowded field of contenders.

Brooks defeated rivals from various factions within the Democratic Party and benefited from support across ideological lines. His campaign received endorsements from prominent figures, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Senator Bernie Sanders, as well as backing from labour organisations and Democratic campaign groups.
His victory now sets up a high-profile contest against Republican Representative Ryan Mackenzie in the general election.
The race had also attracted significant attention after concerns emerged over a last-minute advertising campaign by an outside political group reportedly linked to Republican interests. Observers suggested the effort may have aimed at influencing the Democratic contest by boosting a preferred opponent.
In Pennsylvania’s 1st Congressional District, Bucks County Commissioner Bob Harvie won the Democratic primary and will challenge Republican Representative Brian Fitzpatrick, who has repeatedly retained the seat despite representing a district that has often leaned Democratic in presidential elections.
Elsewhere in Pennsylvania, Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti ran unopposed in the Democratic primary for the 8th District and will face Republican Representative Rob Bresnahan in November.
Former television news anchor Janelle Stelson also secured the Democratic ticket for the 10th Congressional District and is set for a rematch against Republican Representative Scott Perry.
Beyond the battleground states, several closely watched primary contests reflected broader ideological struggles within both major political parties.
In Kentucky, Republican Representative Thomas Massie suffered a major setback after losing his primary election to former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein. The contest drew nationwide attention after President Donald Trump backed Gallrein in an effort to unseat the incumbent lawmaker.
The race reportedly attracted record-breaking levels of political advertising spending, becoming one of the most expensive House primary battles in U.S. history.

Democrats also witnessed an internal contest in Philadelphia, where progressive state lawmaker Chris Rabb emerged victorious in the race to replace retiring Democratic Representative Dwight Evans.
Rabb campaigned on progressive economic policies and secured support from prominent left-leaning figures, positioning himself as a strong voice within the party’s progressive movement.
Meanwhile, other primary races in Georgia and Kentucky produced nominees expected to have strong advantages in heavily partisan districts.
Political analysts believe the outcomes of these primaries will shape the campaign landscape ahead of the general election, as both Democrats and Republicans intensify efforts to secure control of Congress.
