Thousands of people converged on the National Mall in Washington on Sunday for a large religious and patriotic gathering aimed at commemorating the beginning of activities leading to the United States’ 250th anniversary celebration.
The event, known as Rededicate 250, brought together supporters, conservative Christian leaders, musicians and political figures aligned with former President Donald Trump in what organisers described as a public reaffirmation of faith and national identity.

Participants travelled from different parts of the United States for the programme, which featured prayer sessions, worship performances and speeches focused on religion and the future of the country.
Organisers said the gathering was intended to “rededicate” America as “One Nation Under God,” with many attendees expressing concern over what they described as a decline in religious influence in public life.
Some participants said they viewed faith as central to national unity and future progress, arguing that the country needed a stronger spiritual direction.
The programme featured addresses from senior political figures including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and House Speaker Mike Johnson, alongside contributions from Christian leaders and a Jewish faith representative.
However, the event also drew criticism from some religious and civic groups who argued that it projected a limited interpretation of America’s religious identity.
Critics expressed concerns that the rally blurred the distinction between religion and politics and failed to reflect the country’s broader religious diversity.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Interfaith Alliance, Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, said national celebrations should reflect the diverse religious traditions that form part of the American experience rather than elevating a single viewpoint.

The gathering comes amid increasing visibility of religious themes within political discourse under Trump and his allies, including public prayer events and initiatives centred on religious advocacy.
The event was organised by Freedom 250, a Trump-supported organisation coordinating activities ahead of the country’s historic 250th anniversary celebration.
