The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State Branch, has announced the release of Professor Eyo Ekpe and other members of the association who were earlier detained following an incident involving operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH).

The update was conveyed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Public Relations Officer of the association, Dr Gabriel Eyo.

According to the statement, the released persons include members of the NMA and staff of UUTH who were reportedly detained during the operation earlier in the day.

The association expressed gratitude to its members for the support and solidarity shown throughout the incident.

“We appreciate the solidarity, resilience, and overwhelming support demonstrated by members throughout this unfortunate incident,” the statement said.

Despite confirming the release of the detained persons, the NMA maintained that it remained concerned over reports of assault, intimidation, harassment, and what it described as a violation of the sanctity of the hospital environment during the operation.

The association also stated that it was still expecting the implementation of other resolutions earlier adopted by its congress in response to the incident.
