The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State has expelled no fewer than 30 members for instituting legal actions against the party ahead of the forthcoming primary elections.

The decision was announced on Monday by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Valentine Iyiegbu, following a meeting of the State Executive Committee (SEC) held in Awka.

Iyiegbu said the action was taken in accordance with Article 21, Subsection 5 of the APC constitution, which provides sanctions against members who drag the party to court without first exhausting internal dispute resolution mechanisms.

According to him, several of the affected individuals are aspirants seeking the party’s tickets for seats in the House of Representatives and other elective positions.

He explained that the SEC ratified the expulsion after reviewing the cases filed against the party by the members.

“The party discussed those who took the party to court, and many of them are contesting for House of Representatives tickets on the platform of the APC,” he said.

He added that the development could affect the aspirants’ participation in the party’s primary elections unless they withdraw their court cases.

“The SEC stated that what the party constitution stipulates would be followed, which is outright expulsion from the party under Article 21, Subsection 5,” Iyiegbu stated.

According to the APC spokesman, the affected members failed to take advantage of the party’s internal channels for resolving grievances before seeking judicial intervention.

He, however, noted that the party may reconsider its decision if the aggrieved members discontinue their suits in court.

Iyiegbu also disclosed that aspirants have indicated interest in contesting for all 11 House of Representatives seats and the three Senate seats in Anambra State under the APC platform.

The State Executive Committee further ratified the appointment of a five-member primary elections committee headed by the State Organising Secretary of the party, Mr Izuchukwu Okeke.
