Justice Maryanne Anineh of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Maitama, Abuja, on Monday admitted additional documentary exhibits tendered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the ongoing trial of former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, over the alleged unlawful redesign of the naira.

The exhibits, which comprised certified newspaper publications and payment receipts, were admitted during the testimony of the eighth prosecution witness (PW8), Mr Jegede Oluwasegun, an official of the National Library of Nigeria.

Led in evidence by prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, the witness presented certified copies of publications from The Punch, ThisDay, Vanguard, Daily Sun and The Nation newspapers, all containing reports relating to the alleged unlawful naira redesign.

Oyedepo informed the court that the witness and the documents were presented in compliance with a motion on notice filed by the defence on March 31, 2026, requesting the prosecution to produce all press releases and newspaper publications concerning the alleged unlawful act.

The documents were subsequently tendered and admitted in evidence without objection from the defence team.

During cross-examination by defence counsel, Olalekan Ojo, SAN, the witness told the court that his responsibilities at the National Library include attending to information requests from readers and certifying newspaper documents.

He clarified that he neither authored the publications nor had personal knowledge of the contents of the reports, stressing that his role was limited to certification of the newspaper documents.

Emefiele is being prosecuted by the EFCC on a four-count charge bordering on the alleged unlawful printing and redesign of naira notes while serving as CBN governor.
