Team Botswana has arrived safely in Accra, Ghana, ahead of the 2026 Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Senior African Championships scheduled to take place from May 12 to 17.

The Southern African nation is among the early arrivals as preparations intensify for what is expected to be a highly competitive continental athletics event featuring Africa’s top track and field athletes.

The Botswana contingent travelled in two batches over the weekend and has since settled into camp in Accra ahead of the six-day championship.

Before departure, the Botswana Athletics Association announced a final 25-member squad following the conclusion of national camping activities that began on May 6.

The team includes athletes competing across sprint, middle-distance, hurdles, and field events, with Botswana aiming to build on its growing reputation in African athletics.

Key male athletes include Phaezel Selepe and Kevin Lobalatang, who will compete in the 100m and 200m events. Quarter-milers Lee B. Epple and Justice Oratile are also expected to play major roles in Botswana’s medal ambitions following strong performances under the 45-second mark.

In the hurdles category, Kemorena Tisang will lead the charge in both the 110m and 400m events, while Tswanello Akobe and Taolo Lesole will feature in the high jump.

On the women’s side, Boitshepo Kelapile, Katiego Kaisara, and Lone Madzimule are expected to compete in the sprint events, while Obakeng Kamberuka and Naledi Monthe will contest both the 200m and 400m races.

Middle-distance runner Oratile Nowe is set to feature in the 800m and 1500m events, with Tshegofatso Bojosi and Gotitseone Joel competing in field events.

However, Botswana will compete without two of its leading stars, Letsile Tebogo and Collen Kebinatshipi, who were omitted from the final squad for the championships.

The technical team, led by head coach Meleko Ndolo and team manager Keabetswe Friday, will oversee final preparations as the country targets strong podium finishes.

Botswana President Duma Boko recently met with the team following their performance at the World Athletics Relays, expressing confidence in the country’s athletics programme and its continued growth on the international stage.

As the championships begin, Botswana will aim to deliver strong performances and further establish itself as one of Africa’s rising athletics powers.
