The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has urged telecommunications operators in the country to urgently address persistent network and service quality challenges affecting subscribers.

Tijani said the Federal Government had already introduced reforms and interventions aimed at improving the performance of the telecommunications sector, adding that operators must now take concrete steps to improve service delivery.

The minister stated this while addressing concerns over poor connectivity, dropped calls and weak data services experienced by users across the country.

He noted that operators including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria and Globacom were expected to improve the quality of their services.

According to him, Nigeria’s network problems stem largely from years of inadequate infrastructure investment and structural challenges within the sector.

Tijani said the government had begun implementing key projects to close infrastructure gaps, including a World Bank-supported broadband initiative under Project BRIDGE, nationwide fibre optic expansion, telecom tower deployment through NUCAP and improved satellite connectivity.

He explained that the projects were expected to improve connectivity nationwide within the next two to five years.

The minister also highlighted recent reforms introduced by the government, including telecom tariff adjustments, tax harmonisation and the designation of telecom infrastructure as critical national infrastructure.

He said the measures had helped stabilise the sector and restore profitability for operators, giving them the capacity to invest in service improvements.

Tijani added that the Nigerian Communications Commission had been empowered to independently monitor network performance, enforce quality standards and sanction defaulting operators.

He assured Nigerians that improvements would soon be noticed in call quality, data services, network coverage and overall service delivery.

The minister stressed that consumers deserved value for money spent on telecom services and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring improved performance across the sector.
