The United States on Thursday carried out defensive strikes against at least two locations in Iran following attacks on American naval vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to a U.S. official.

The strikes targeted sites in Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island, areas strategically located near the vital maritime corridor linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. The official described the operation as defensive in nature, emphasising that it does not signal a broader resumption of major combat operations against Iran.

In a statement posted on X, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that multiple American warships came under attack while navigating international waters.

According to CENTCOM, Iranian forces launched missiles, drones, and small attack boats targeting the USS Truxtun (DDG 103), USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115), and USS Mason (DDG 87).

“No U.S. assets were struck,” CENTCOM stated, adding that American forces successfully intercepted and neutralised the incoming threats.

The military command said U.S. forces subsequently targeted Iranian military infrastructure believed to be directly linked to the attacks. The strikes reportedly focused on missile and drone launch sites, command and control centres, as well as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance facilities.

“U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) eliminated inbound threats and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for attacking U.S. forces,” the statement said. “CENTCOM does not seek escalation but remains positioned and ready to protect American forces.”

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes, handling a significant portion of global oil exports. Any military confrontation in the region raises concerns over regional stability and international energy markets.

There was no immediate response from Iranian authorities regarding the reported strikes or the allegations made by the United States.
