Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered a nationwide audit of arms and ammunition across all commands and formations of the Nigeria Police Force.
The directive was issued during an emergency conference with Commissioners of Police and members of the press held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Disu said the audit is aimed at strengthening accountability, preventing misuse of weapons, and enhancing operational effectiveness within the Force.

He stressed that the exercise is a critical institutional measure rather than a routine administrative process, noting that it would ensure all police arms and ammunition are properly documented, secured, and deployed in line with national security objectives.
“The audit will help us identify operational gaps, improve internal control systems, and reinforce professionalism across commands,” the IGP said.
He directed all Commissioners of Police to ensure the process is conducted thoroughly and transparently, with detailed reports to be submitted to the Force Headquarters within a stipulated timeframe.
The police chief reiterated the Force’s commitment to ongoing reforms focused on accountability, transparency, and efficiency.
He added that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to build a disciplined and responsive police institution capable of addressing evolving security challenges across the country.

The Nigeria Police Force assured the public that the audit would strengthen internal controls and improve service delivery in line with global best practices.
