The Akwa Ibom State Government has heightened surveillance and response measures following reports of a COVID-19 outbreak in a neighbouring state.

In a joint press release issued on Sunday, the Commissioners for Health, Dr Ekem Emmanuel John, and Information, Aniekan Umanah, said the move was aimed at preventing a possible spread of the virus into the state.

According to the statement, Governor Umo Eno has directed the Ministry of Health to activate surveillance systems across entry points, health facilities, and communities, with disease surveillance officers and rapid response teams placed on alert to promptly detect and manage suspected cases.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and strictly observe preventive measures, including regular handwashing, use of alcohol-based sanitisers, wearing face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces, and avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.

The government also advised against handshakes and other physical greetings, while encouraging anyone with symptoms to seek immediate medical attention.

Healthcare workers were specifically directed to maintain a high level of alertness and adhere to infection prevention and control protocols.

The statement further noted that the state is strengthening collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and other relevant partners to ensure effective monitoring and coordinated response efforts.

Reassuring residents of its commitment to safeguarding public health, the government urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports that could cause panic.
