The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man, Chukwemeka Destiny, for allegedly plotting the kidnap of his aunt who raised him from childhood.
The suspect was paraded on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Bright Edafe, who revealed that Destiny had paid a total of N900,000 to individuals he believed were kidnappers to abduct the woman.
According to the police, Destiny lived with his aunt from the age of five to 15, during which she took care of his upbringing and education. He reportedly left the home afterwards and severed ties with the family.
Edafe described the incident as part of a troubling pattern of betrayal and criminal acts against benefactors and close associates.
“All of a sudden, he conceived the idea of kidnapping the same aunt who trained him and saw him through school. We have seen cases where employees attack their employers or security guards turn against their bosses. It is a worrying trend,” he said.
The police spokesman disclosed that the suspect made payments in two instalments—N200,000 and N700,000—bringing the total to N900,000.
However, the plot was foiled after the individuals he contacted were not kidnappers. Instead, they reportedly played along and subsequently handed him over to the police.
“Unknown to him, the people he contacted were not kidnappers. They used him as bait and handed him over to the police, thereby saving the life of his aunt,” Edafe added.
During interrogation, Destiny reportedly confessed to the crime but said he could not explain his actions.
“Sincerely speaking, I am guilty. I don’t know what came over me. I can’t explain,” he said.
The suspect, who identified himself as a married father of two, attributed his actions to external influence when pressed further. He added that he runs a haulage and building materials business and sourced the money from his earnings.
Reacting to the development, the aunt—who identified Destiny as her elder sister’s son—expressed shock and distress over the incident.
“I was shocked… I was crying,” she said, visibly emotional.
She explained that since leaving her home as a teenager, Destiny had not maintained any meaningful relationship with the family, despite occasionally being seen in the neighbourhood.
Asked whether she would prefer leniency or prosecution, the woman insisted that the law should take its full course of action.
“Whatever the law says should be done, let it be done,” she said.
Edafe commended her stance, noting that allowing justice to prevail is crucial in addressing rising cases of violent crimes involving relatives and trusted associates.
The suspect is currently in the custody of the Delta State Police Command’s Raiders Squad, while investigations are ongoing.
