The Presidency has clarified that the former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, and the former Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Architect Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, resigned from their positions and were not dismissed.

According to a release issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, both ministers voluntarily stepped down from the Federal Executive Council.

The statement explained that Edun tendered his resignation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing health reasons, before the announcement of his replacement. The former finance minister, who turned 70 on Monday, reportedly submitted his resignation letter on his birthday after battling recent ill health.

In his resignation letter, Edun expressed appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve, noting that it was a “pleasure and privilege” to be part of the administration. He also commended the government’s economic direction, stating that Nigeria had become “stronger, more resilient and more internationally respected” under Tinubu’s leadership.

Edun also paid a valedictory visit to the President at the State House before the official announcement of his exit. He is expected to return to private business engagements.

Similarly, the former Housing Minister, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, resigned his appointment and thanked the President for the opportunity to serve in the cabinet. Dangiwa, an architect, previously served as Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria between 2015 and 2022 and as Secretary to the Katsina State Government before his ministerial appointment in August 2023.

President Tinubu, according to the statement, expressed appreciation to both men for their service and contributions to the administration’s reform agenda, wishing them success in their future endeavours.

Meanwhile, the President has tasked the new Minister of Finance, Mr Taiwo Oyedele, to consolidate ongoing reforms and drive the administration’s fiscal and economic objectives with renewed focus.

He is also expected to forward the nomination of Mr Muttaqha Rabe Darma to the Senate for confirmation as the new Minister of Housing.

The Presidency emphasised that the exits of Edun and Dangiwa were voluntary, putting to rest speculation that they were removed from office.
